Location
This photo was taken by the Dansleikur/Dance sculpture outside the Perlan restaurant in Reykjavík, Iceland. The restaurant is situated in a beautiful former planetarium and features a stunning glass dome structure that houses the restaurant.Time
This was in November, so hours with light were very few and far between. We stopped here for lunch during a morning bus tour around the city, probably around 12-1pm.Lighting
I loved Icelandic winter morning light filtered through clouds and fog, sun beams peaking through and bouncing off of the fallen snow. It lended a wintery aura to the light that was only enhanced by 35mm film. It was around 11-1p when we were on the tour, I believe, and this was our meal stop along the way.Equipment
This was taken on a 35mm fuji film disposable, no flash, hand held. V old school travel vibes.Inspiration
I always like to have a couple disposables and point and shoots on hand to capture a different energy of the space I’m in when I’m in it. There’s just something DSLR and digital can’t capture in the air that somehow translates on film, and I love being able to have both options to get a full well-rounded representation of a moment or place or energy. These statues really spoke to me in a powerful way. I had been grieving losing my father to cancer and this trip to Iceland was a relatively spontaneous one that I booked and planned with two people that I had just met within a week of knowing them (we had an amazing time albeit some miniscule drama between my travel mates), so it was really just a whole trip of going off of instinct and gut. Staring at these figures just really spoke to the turmoil inside my heart and gave it a serenity I hadn’t felt in a while. I captured this to remember that feeling and keep it alive.Editing
Nope! Just beautiful 35mm film, no fuss no muss. Was developed, printed, and scanned. No post-processing in applications. In my camera bag
As I mentioned earlier, I like to keep a couple disposables in my purse—I usually reach for Kodak, FujiFilm, or Ilford. I also have a Leica Mini 2 and an Olympus Mju ii I love—my fav film is portra 800 35mm. digital i shoot with a canon eos 5d mark iv, and i also have a g7x for travel video. lenses when i travel will be a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens, and a Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens. Sometimes I’ll add a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN ART Lens as well. I also have the Sigma ART Lens in 50mm. I’m just really in love with the images Sigma Lenses produce.Feedback
Tap into how you’re feeling in a given moment and how your internal experience is represented out in the tableau that is the world in front of you. Be patient—stare into the viewfinder and wait for the perfect shutter moment. You’ll know it when you feel it. When the shutter compels you to press it. When everything settles into the frame just how you envisioned. Don’t feel rushed into capturing an image. Savor the view from the view finder. Relish in the beauty before you. Play with your center, move the subject around your frame in unexpected ways you may not typically capture on a regular basis. Keep a playful and curious eye and heart. Always have fun, enjoying the process of creating and capturing.
