The brave men and women who work as artisanal diamond miners on the peripheries of Kimberleys diamond industry. Before meeting and interacting with these powerful people I was not aware that diamond mining was ongoing in the region.

Interestingly enough, the practice of artisanal mining was not always legal and accessible without fear of death and retribution from the mining magnets and the mining underworld that makes up Kimberley.

Shockingly it is an extremely fruitful endeavour to the skilled miner, with the most skilled such as ‘Oupa’ photographed second last, having pulled stones up to 18 carats out of the ground as well as being shot in the leg by authorities during a protest of mining rights.

In order to legalise this practice many of these brave miners had to risk their lives protesting against the unequal distribution of mining permits and land to the corporate sharks.
