Hamnøy is another example, for a location I've visited multiple times during my trip. I imagined capturing a perfectly lit sunset with glowing orange colors, but unfortunately I've never had the required conditions. Nevertheless I've tried to make the best out of the available light.

Did you ever visit a location with a precise idea in mind and came back with something completely different?

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken from a bridge next to the small village Hamnøy in the Lofoten.

Time

The picture was taken during the blue hour, shortly after any hope for a vibrant sunset vanished.

Lighting

When you're shooting landscapes the light is out of your control. You can do your best research and still be surprised by nature with completely different conditions than you were expecting. That's why it's important to adapt. In this particular case, I was hoping to capture a perfectly lit sunset with glowing orange colors, but the sky didn't clear up. Nevertheless, I took advantage of the overcast sky and the resulting soft light and created a completely different picture from what I originally anticipated.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D750 with an old Sigma 15-30mm lens at 18mm stabilized on a tripod. The lens isn't ideal as it has some lens flare, sharpness, and chromatic aberration issues. That's why it's usually not my default choice, but the scene required a wide-angle and was overcast anyway and that at least gets rid of the flare issue.

Inspiration

A long while ago I used to have a wallpaper of Hamnøy on my computer and ever since I wanted to visit that view. That's why there was no option in missing out on that location during our summer road trip through Norway last summer.

Editing

As with all of my pictures I invest a fair amount of time into the editing process. In this particular case, I've started in Lightroom by matching the white balance as it was a little bit off and some basic raw adjustments. I quickly moved to Photoshop, where I, first of all, removed some sensor dust spots and some disturbing objects. I then progressed to some contrast adjustments using luminosity masks and some advanced color adjustments. For the latter, I've decided on a pleasing color scheme beforehand. Furthermore, I've dodged and burned some areas, once again using luminosity masks. Finally, I've finished the picture by adding a vignette.

In my camera bag

Over the past couple of years, my equipment changed quite often but my backpack contents always include the following gear : - a wide-angle lens - a standard zoom lens - a telephoto lens - a polarizer - various ND filters - a tripod

Feedback

Don't lose motivation, because something doesn't go as planned! Adapt to the changes, or in the worst-case scenario revisit the location. You'll often find yourself creating a far better picture with (maybe) a good story behind it.
