Behind The Lens

Location

I realized this picture in August 2019, during one of the last shooting days for the collections of some new images for the ending of my book called "THE MAGIC LAKE IN THE TIRINO VALLEY" - http://www.ilbludelmare.it/libri/

Time

Diving in "Capo d'Acqua" Lake you realize that the light is spectacular, due to the transparency of the water. This image was taken close to midday with the sun setting over the lake. The light is magically reflected and refracted, creating plays of light and beautiful green-blue shades.

Lighting

Looking and searching for the right shot for this photo, I tried to highlight the contrasts of the shadows and lights, but above all to highlight the "magic" of the location, taking it in a very long field (14 mm f/4) and showing the comparison with the divers that allow to understand both the depth of the water, both the size of the ancient submerged mills.

Equipment

I taken this shot using my Canon 5D mkIV, with Canon L 8-15mm, set at 14 mm f/4, in a EasyDive LeoII pro underwater housing. I didn't use any tripod but only buoyancy arms, for the reason the point of view has been taken near the surface of the lake. I didn't use underwater strobes, 'cause my desire was to underline the natural lights and the contrast of the shadows. The original file was in RAW format and I didn't use any filter or heavy post production (only Camera Raw).

Inspiration

I have been frequenting Lake Capo d'Acqua and the whole Tirino Valley (Capestrano, L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy) for almost 20 years and I dive both in the lake and in the streams and rivers of the area, because I fell in love with the colors and transparencies difficult to find elsewhere. After the big earthquake that hit both l'Aquila both the Tirino valley, the submerged mills have had some damage. Due to my work (I'm a marine ecologist and scientific documentarist) I tried to do to something to emphasize the beauty of this place, in order to collect money and eventual investors/donors to use for a work of restoration and safety of these ancient mills. So I have decided to write a photographic book: IL LAGO MACIGO NELLA VALLE DEL TIRINO - "THE MAGIC LAKE IN THE TIRINO VALLEY" - http://www.ilbludelmare.it/libri/

Editing

I applied only Camera Raw process development.

In my camera bag

I normally have Canon 5D mkIV with Canon L serie lenses.

Feedback

To try to capture something similar, underwater, you have to become, before, a very good diver moreover a good photographer!
