The imposing Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice. This beautiful building stands on the Punta della Dogana between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal and is obliquely opposite St Mark's Square. This view is from the Grand Canal. It was consecrated in 1681 and was built as an offering for the deliverance of Venice from a plague that ravished the city in 1630. Its domes became an emblem of the city andit has been painted by artists such as Canaletto and Turner.
