Before sunrise at Newlyn, I was drawn to this fishing boat. Firstly, because it's lights were on and secondly, because of it's yellow colour contrasting with the moody greyish-blue sky.
I wanted to use the ropes & cleat to anchor the foreground. Rather than faffing with my tripod (and having to invert the camera on the centre column), I shot this handheld. I just wanted to bag a shot quickly before the lights may have gone out or something.
Afterwards, I did stick the camera on the tripod which allowed me to narrow the aperture to create a sunburst effect on one of the lights. I didn't bother to faff with the inversion though, so I wasn't as happy with the composition. And in the chosen exposure, I liked the small detail of the figure walking along the harbour - causing a seagull to scarper...
