Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Badlands national park in the USA.

Time

I didn't choose the moment of the day. I was driving to the badlands, admiring this infinite landscape. Suddenly, I saw the perfect instant. I stopped my car on the right side, then went to the middle of the road and took a series of photos, with various parameters.

Lighting

I prefer moving cloudy skies than blue skies because they provide great effects.

Equipment

I used my D800 and my 16-35 mm.

Inspiration

First, in the Badlands, they sky is so big that you feel so small! I wanted to render this feeling of being small in front of Mother Nature. Second, I'm an endless traveler, and my favorite series on which I permanently work is "Passing".(https://parlamer.net/galleries/passing/) It's a series which reminds us that we're only passing in this world.

Editing

I developed this photo in LR. The main difficulty was to keep a balance in the contrast between the ground and the sky. Both were highly contrasted in the real life.

In my camera bag

I always have with me my D800 with my 80-400 and my 16-35. Either I take ultra wide angles or zoomed photo, I rarely take normal view photos.

Feedback

For this kind of photo, I think that the rule of third is very important. Give importance to the sky or to the ground, but don't give them equal importance. If you have time, take several photos with each time different parameters. You'll choose the best one when you'll come back at home.
