A hill on the right bank of the Volga River in the Central District of the city of Volgograd, where fierce battles took place during the Battle of Stalingrad, starting in September 1942 and ending in January 1943. Today Mamayev Kurgan is known primarily for the monument-ensemble "To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad" with the main monument "The Motherland Calls!" There are several mass and individual graves on the Mamayev Kurgan, in which the ashes of more than 35,000 defenders of Stalingrad rest
