Location
I took this picture in Katmai, Alaska on an Art Wolfe workshop. The area we went to was about a 1 hour seaplane ride away from the lodge we where staying at. It is a very tundra like area with a lots of wind at times. We saw 30+ bears every day hiking around the rivers where a lot of the bears where fishing. It was in the wild so very uneven ground and lots of dead salmon around. If you ever have a chance to do one of these tours I highly recommend it. We also went to the famous Brooks Falls on the first day, a little touristy now days but still worth the journey if you have a chance.Time
We where in the field for 6 to 8 hours a day starting around 9 in the morning. If I remember right we saw this mom in cubs late morning that day.Lighting
The whole trip was pretty much sunny with no clouds.Equipment
My equipment was pretty basic for this hike a Canon EOS R Camera and Sigma 150-600 lens. Everything was hand held don't really have time to setup a tripod. Plus we where always moving.Inspiration
A momma bear and cubs what more needs to be said. :) I shot about 15,000 pictures over the 4.5 days in the field.Editing
Just some basic adjustments in Lightroom and converted it to B&W.In my camera bag

Well I think the big thing is making sure you have guide(s) that know their way around bears. While we had amazing and surreal experiences, never felt nervous after the first day. As an example we where on a top of a bluff shooting bears below us, when a momma bear and two cubs come up and sit down 15 ft from us. Where we just turned 90 degrees and took some more pictures. Then they getup and walk away, never a care in the world. Now these bears are around fly fisherman all the time so they are pretty used to people being out in the wild with them. You give them space they are going to let you photograph them.
