Playing with my camera settings to get the soft water effect at Rearguard Falls. On the lower right hand side you can see the point of a salmon tail as it tackles its way up the falls.

This photo is Rearguard Falls in Mount Robson Provincial Park in British Columbia. We were fortunate enough to be there at the end of August during the salmon run.Time
This photo was taken around 1 pm and you have to walk down a staircase and steep path to get to the falls. I got to the bottom and was mad that I had the wrong lens and I didn't want to go all the way back up to the car. Turns out that my Nikon Zoom lens was the right lens - I was able to slow down the shutter speed to get the soft water effect.Lighting
Since this was taken around 1pm the sun was high in the sky and illuminated the water really well. I was surprised at the picture I was able to get by slowing down the shutter speed.Equipment
This photo was taken with my Nikon D750 and my Nikon 70-300mm zoom lens. I took this photo hand held but resting on the railing of the fence by the falls.Inspiration
Many years ago, when I first got my Nikon D3200 camera, we went to Rearguard Falls and I was practicing getting a soft water shot after I finished my photography lessons from a local photographer. Back then I used a 35 mm lens and was happy with the results. Flash forward about 6 years, I have a Nikon D750 and wanted to see if I could get the same type of photo. I was thrilled with the result!Editing
This photo did not need much post processing done at all. I used Lightroom and did apply some noise reduction as well as some sharpening. In my camera bag
I normally have my Nikon D750 and Sigma Art lens for trips like these and was mad I didn't bother to check that I had the right lens on my camera. As it turns out, the lens I had was what I needed to zoom in and get the shot!Feedback
If you ever get a chance to go to Mount Robson Park, I recommend the end of August. This is the first year we went that late but were able to see the salmon jumping up the falls to spawn in the Fraser River. It was quite a site to see!
