Another sunset at Jökuksárlón! Most of the time I experience Iceland's large glacier lagoon in clouds, this day was also very cloudy and I hadn't dared hope that there would still be color in the sky in the evening

Behind The Lens

Location

This is the famous glacier Lagoon Jökuksárlón in Iceland. I took the picture just from the path that leads from the parking to the bridge

Time

It's sunset - in summer the sun sets so that you can take the best pictures very close to the large parking lot

Lighting

Taking photos at Jökulsárlón is not that easy: the water is usually a bit wavy, so you would like to choose a longer exposure time to smooth the water. However, the icebergs are also in motion, so the exposure time must not be too long. The sunset itself was so bright that a long exposure time was not absolutely necessary

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens an d a tripod

Inspiration

The glacier lagoon is one of the highlights in Iceland - nowhere else can you see such large icebergs floating on the water up close. Sunset and sunrise are the best times for photography because the warm light contrasts nicely with the cold ice

Editing

This is an HDR recording - so I took a series of exposures and combined it with the Aurora program from Skylum. The program has a lot of presets, you just have to choose the right one

In my camera bag

First and foremost, I photograph landscapes. I have two lenses in my backpack for this genre: the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM and the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. Various ND and GND filters as well as a tripod are of course always included. If the way to the photo spot is not too long or too difficult, I also like to take the Tamron 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 SP Di VC USM with me for detailed shots. Occasionally I do astrophotography with the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art but this thing is so heavy that it is only taken for that special occasion. My second big passion is wildlife photography. Here I have the Tamron SP 150-600mm F / 5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 (also very heavy and therefore not always in the backpack) for the larger and more abrasive specimens and the Tamron SP 90mm 1: 2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD for the tiny ones For indoor photography and other occasions where you need an ultra-wide angle, I recently added another heavyweight - the Sigma 12-24mm f / 4 DG HSM Art, which is not always included due to the weight. I use all those lenses with my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV My newest toy is a drone: the dji Mavic 2 pro for unusual perspectives, abstractions and a view over the fog

Feedback

When you come to Jökulsárlón, you always have a different mood. Wind, weather, icebergs - everything is in constant change. It is impossible to schedule a recording there. You have to take the weather as it is and make the best of it. I've also traveled to Iceland before, when I didn't take a single picture at Jökulsárlón
