This was taken on the Northeastern coast of Jekyll Island, Georgia.Time
Arrival was predawn on an overcast day and between rain showers. The tide was receding shooting time on the beach was probably Tree and a half hours. This shot is one of several hundred and came later in the morning around 8:30 am.Lighting
In between rain showers the sun would peek through and with the multi layered clouds unusual collor combinations would occur, as evidenced by this photo.Equipment
My camera was a Nikon D4 with a Really Right Stuff L bracket on a Gitzo tripod and a RRS Ballhead. The lens was the Nikon 28-300mm stopped down to f14. Iso was 100 which resulted on a 3 sec exposure. I was shooting in Apeture mode and trying to catch the swirls in the water with a longer shutter speed.Inspiration
This beach on Jekyll Island had hundreds of tree skeletons littering the beach as the Island is moving south due to erosion. What had been a dense forest now litters the beach. Hours can be spent photographing there because the changing lighting conditions, tides , shadows and shapes keep offering new and exciting photographic possibilities. I have heard that hurricanes have dimininshed the number of skeleton trees but many still remain.Editing
I have few versions of this shot. This particular on was edited in Lightroom. All of the changes came from the Develope modules sliders.In my camera bag
Currently my Main Camera is Nikon D850 for landscapes. I will always have Nikons 17-35 mm f2.8, Nikon's 28-70mm f2.8, and the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 with me. For wildlife I shoot the D6 with an 800mm Nikon. Studio work is the D6 with Nikons 105 mm f1.4 or Nikon 105mm f1.4 lens.Feedback
Shooting driftwood on a beach is always rewarding. Any weather, any time there is light and any time of year. There is always something which can make a memorable photograph.
