Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Balloon Festival in Steamboat Springs Colorado during the 2021 Balloon Festival.

Time

This was in the morning around 9 am on that Friday when the festival kicked off. Unfortunately not a lot of Balloons go up due to weather. This was one of them out of 4 total that morning.

Lighting

Because it was early the sun just came over the mountains on a clear day. It lights up the entire Balloon on one side and was so intense it was the perfect time and weather.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my Canon Rebel t8i and kit lens I had on at this point. Do also have prime lenses in my bag but even with kit lenses you can achieve great photos. Also this was free handed no flash or tripod.

Inspiration

Never shot hot air balloons before so this was an exciting day for me. Unfortunately it was only a handful of balloons that went up. But made the best of it and this shot turned out to be my favorite.

Editing

Did a little postprocessing. Ultimately increased the colors a little just to make it pop but the light was so great that it did not need much. Sometimes less is more. In this case this is definitely true.

In my camera bag

A lot... Beside my main camera. Canon 28-300mm, Canon 100mm Macro, Canon 55-200mm, Canon 18-55, Canon 50mm, LED lights and 74" tripod and a little flex tripod. Cleaning equipment straps. batteries cables it adds up. But I enjoy to take the equipment with me specially for hikes. Keeps me in shape :)

Feedback

My mentor always said to me "do not try to hard. Go out and shoot what you see." This always stuck with me. Of course sometimes I go out with certain subjects and goals in my mind but sometimes you look up and maybe see a hot air balloon over your head.
