I love photography and I love fragrances. Lately, I've decided to use a 50mm lens and some basic reflection techniques to do some creative still life photography of the beautiful fragrance bottles in my collection. The 50mm lens gives me total control of the shallow depth of field that can be achieved when the camera is positioned in a proper angle.

Behind The Lens

Location

Shot this photo at the backyard garden. I was home during a weekend and thought of doing a small personal project.

Time

It was a lovely fall afternoon. The crisp fall breeze and the clear blue skies just lit up the natural studio so well.

Lighting

This photo was taken under natural lighting conditions. It was a Fall afternoon with clear blue skies and the sun's angle and intensity were just right.

Equipment

Used my trusty Nikon D750 and a nifty-fifty (50 mm) lens. Made use of the excellent natural light on this clear Fall afternoon.

Inspiration

Fragrances are what I'm extremely passionate about and this hobby sits right next to photography. I noticed how these bottles reflect so nicely on shiny surfaces, so I poured some water, placed the bottle in it and angled my desired shot with the camera set very low towards the ground.

Editing

Yes, I made adjustments to the exposure, contrast and color saturation and lightness. Since I shot the photo in Flat color profile, I had more control on the sliders in post.

In my camera bag

Apart from my DSLR body, Nikon D750, I'll always have the Nikon 50 mm, Tokina 11-16 mm f/2.8 and the Nikon 70-300 mm VR II lens on me. Pretty much covers all the focal lengths for the kind of works that I like doing. Of course! Spare batteries.

Feedback

Days are pretty much shorter in late Fall. You gotta time your shots and act fast. You gotta work on the best angle to get the best reflection.
