Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my garage. It sounds funny, but yes I did that shot in my garage, because it was plenty of water spills all over the floor.

Time

It was a long afternoon for me, because I was trying to find the best place to try a new idea of the photo I was thinking of for many days. I went to my garage and cleaned up the area, set up the table, tripods, lights, grabbed bottle of water, ound a perfect cup, and finally I was ready and it was very later, past 10pm.

Lighting

My idea was to take a photo in the complete dark room, The only light I used was a flash for the perfect moment

Equipment

I used my 24-105mm STM lens, a speedlight, two tripods, one for camera and one for the flash, and a "pluto" trigger for sound recognition in order to flash the light when it hears the sound (in which was the sound of cup of water hitting the table)

Inspiration

Once I was searching on the internet for the remote wireless trigger where camera could take a photo while I was focusing on setting up the perfect moment for the shot. I saw a pluto trigger on website for sale, and decided to try it. I manually focused camera lens on the spot where the cup of water was suppose to fall, set up pluto trigger for (if im not wrong) 450 milliseconds post the sound detection, in which would be the impact of the cup of water hitting the table. Connected flash to the pluto trigger and made few tests with dropping the cup from about 3 feet above the table. I set up camera for timer, and shutter speed for 10 seconds, ISO at 100. and aperture for 4. ( I may have changed that later) Flash speed was set to minimum. So many fails I've made and I had to change the delay flash release with pluto trigger to either higher or lower. I was getting very tired. Finally... Picture came out perfect, and all I had left in garage in a big pond of water on the floor, and water splashed all over the walls, background mat and equipment, but I finally made it!

Editing

After the perfect shot was taken, I went on my software Luminar AI and I did sharpen the water drops, water, and a cup, as well as I did change the picture for a grayscale.

In my camera bag

When I travel I takes two bags with me, one with my DJI Ronin-S, One flash, and two cameras. Canon 90D and 6D Mark2, and few extra batteries with grip for extra battery, extra 2 SD cards and a charger.

Feedback

Find yourself a great spot for that kind of picture, especially if you are new to this like I am, and also a lot of free time and a willingness to that photo shots.
