The Deadvlei was formed after rainfall when the Tsauchab River flooded, creating shallow pools where the acacias could grow in the abundance of water. When the climate changed, the area was plagued by drought, sand dunes surrounded the plain, blocking the river's water flow. Because too little water came to the trees, they died.
