Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo when we went on a Blue Bird tour at Ellis Bird Farm near Lacombe, Alberta, Canada in the summer of 2021.

Time

The time was around 10:30 am in morning. The tour started at 10 am and after stopping for a few stops here and there, we spotted a Bluebird nest around 10:25am. We were there for about 15 minutes watching the Bluebirds grabbing grubs for their little chicks.

Lighting

It was bright and sunny that day so no special lighting. This photo was taken when a small cloud covered the sun reducing the glare from the bird.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D500 along with a Sigma 15-600 lens.

Inspiration

I have seen many photographers in Alberta taking beautiful pictures of the Bluebird and I wanted one too. We went to quite a few places in search of them but with no luck. Finally we decided to go for the tour and we were in luck.

Editing

Yes, there was a bit of post processing involved. I use a tool called Darktable. I did some colour adjustments as well as did a bit of sharpening and denoising.

In my camera bag

I usually have just my camera and the lens. I am not a professional photographer so I dont have a bag as such. Even though nowadays, I do carry an extra battery and an extra pair of memory cards.

Feedback

To take sharp bird photos make sure your shutter speed is high. And always take as many photos as possible; you never know which one comes out the best.
