Our first game drive at Machaba Camp, Khwai. We had arrived late in the day due to flight times and left camp later than the rest of the guests. The first rains had fallen that morning and there was a lot of water on the ground. The sky was still very overcast. We saw a few bull elephants grazing in the river, far too many warthogs and a few antelope.

As the sun, what we could see of it, fell. It was suggested that we should visit the communal hyena den, which seemed to be a regular spot in Khwai for post sundown activity as there were a few other vehicles there.

When we arrived there were several female hyenas greeting each other while trying to keep tabs on their wayward offspring who occasionally shot off into the scrub and were retrieved by mum a few moments later. The cubs, we counted 7, ran around together and were really curious of this strange substance that had formed pools around their dens during he day. It was entertaining to watch them tentatively sniff and pad at the puddles of water.
