Location
I took this photograph while on vacation. We were walking through these walking paths to get to the Biltmore in North Carolina, and all of a sudden I came to a stop and snapped this picture.Time
This photograph was taken around 8am. The sun was just perfect!Lighting
On the walking paths there were areas of shade and also areas of soft sunlight. I made sure that when I took the picture, I was in the soft sunlight to ensure there would be no shadows. The colors of the magnificent butterfly were so vibrant I didn't need bright harsh light. It was the perfect lighting situation!Equipment
This photograph was shot with my Nikon z5. The lens I used was a Nikon DX 55-200mm. The great thing about that lens was that I could take the picture from far away so as to not disturbing it.Inspiration
Well, to be honest,I came to take pictures of the Biltmore and its surroundings. But, I also always have my camera with me at all times because you never know when you are going to come across something amazing. When I saw that butterfly, I immediately knew I had to get a shot of it in its natural habitat.Editing
Thankfully, this picture did not require much editing. I used the brush tool in Lightroom to sharpen the wings of the butterfly and the cropping tool to make it a little bit more tighter so that the focus was clearly on the butterfly. In my camera bag
irst of all, you have to have a great bag to carry all your equipment in. I love my Bag Smart backpack because I can still have it on my back, but use a side zippered opening to easily pull my camera out without losing precious time by taking the backpack off. I ALWAYS carry my Nikon z5 camera wherever I go. I also, up until recently, always carried my Nikon DX 55-200mm lens, my DX 18-55mm lens, an external flash, 2 cards, battery charger, and my camera hood. Now, my everyday lens that I carry with me is my AF-S Nikkor 50 mm 1:1.8 G! That lens is absolutely incredible! It is amazing how light it is and the image quality is exceptional!Feedback
If you want to try and recreate an image similar to this one, you need to have your camera out and ready to snap at any moment. You never know how long you are going to have before you lose your subject. I would also recommend using a lens that allows you to be far enough away from your subject so that you don't scare it off. If you use a lens like I did, you have to be extremely steady and still so that you get a crisp image. You also have to be patient and give yourself grace because this is something that you can't control. If you don't get it that time, just keep an eye out because there is a good chance other opportunity is sure to come up!
