Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at one of my absolute favorite childhood places. 240-year-old Mission de San Juan Capistrano in Orange County, Southern California. A recent vacation to the region afforded the opportunity to make the drive down, so we made a point of visiting these beautifully maintained gardens and chapels, which are rich with California history. Built in 1776, as the seventh of 21 missions to be established in California, it is still significant in today's society.

Time

I was concerned about being able to capture the dynamics and contrasts of the porticos, as it was high noon and a bright, sunny California afternoon. I chose this frame to shoot in monochrome, as I was drawn to the ease at which I was transported back to the 1800's by the texture of the bricks and timbers.

Lighting

This is all naturally lit - you can see how it's trying to blow out the details on the left - it was a beautiful, sunny afternoon.

Equipment

Although I had my Nikon D780 o the trip, this outing was best served by my trust, old Nikon D5200 - smaller, lighter and quite up to the task. This was taken with my Nikon lens, 18-55mm at 18mm, f9, 1/100s, ISO 400, hand-held, no flash (no tripods allowed, either).

Inspiration

Ah, the challenge of trying to convey space and time...the vanishing point!! Leading lines!! Couldn't resist.

Editing

Yes, only slightly, as this was shot in full color, then adjusted brightness after selecting the monochrome settings in Nikon's post-processing program, ViewNX. Nothing further, though.

In my camera bag

I am deeply in love with my relatively new (to me) Nikon D780, so she's first in the bag. Then my nikon lenses, especially the full-frame 24-70mm, f2.8 I got when I purchased the new camera. I also keep close by my Tokina 11-16mm. Still saving up for a couple of new full-frame lenses in the near future. My trusty old D5200 also tags along, just in case...Don't forget the tripod(s) and filters, LED lights, intervalometers, etc. Lens cleaning supplies are essential and a headlamp with a red light.
