Summertime clouds behind the Eiffel Tower and l’Institut de France on the Left Bank. The institute is housed in the former Collège des Quatre-Nations, named after the four “nations” (student guilds) at the medieval Parisian university from territories recently acquired through the Peace of Westphalia and the Treaty of the Pyrenées. Students at the Collège des Quatre-Nations came from Flanders, Artois, Hainaut, Luxembourg, Pignerol, the Papal states, Roussillon, Conflent, Cerdagne, Alsace and other Germanic territories.
