This photo was taken at Alum Creek Reservoir in Ohio. I was there on a photo club outing to capture some twilight and night shots.Time
It was in the evening. I was with a group of photo club members and we were there to capture some twilight and night shots and were in place a little earlier than expected. As we waited, we were treated to an unexpected very beautiful sunset. I set up a tripod and started shooting as quickly as I could. Past experience had taught me that when the sun is setting you can loose that beautiful sunset very quickly!Lighting
The opportunity to capture beautiful sunsets like this is all about timing. You have to be quick to get in place and set up to be able to capture that special moment. I struggled to get my equipment set up in time to capture the fleeting light and colors but it worked out great this time. I set the camera on a tripod and took three exposures which I later combined in and HDR software program to help me capture the beauty as close as to what I had observed.Equipment
I was using a 35mm Canon D70 with a Canon wide angle lens. I had my camera set up on a Bogan tripod and a Manfrotto tripod head. I set up the camera to capture three photos at different exposures after a 10 second delay so that there would be no camera movement from pushing the shutter button during the exposures time.Inspiration
I love taking photographs of sunsets, especially over a body of water. Sunsets remind me of how incredible the beauty of nature can be. This was one of the most beautiful sunsets that I have ever observed and I feel blessed that I was able to capture and share what I had experienced with others.Editing
I combined three different exposures in an HDR program to in order to capture all of the colors. I like working with HDR, ( High Dynamic Range). In my camera bag
A digital single lens reflex camera and a high end pocket camera. I usually carry three lenses for the DSLR camera which usually consists of a wide angle lens, a medium telephoto lens and a standard 50mm lens. I also sometimes carry a macro lens. There are also some assorted items such as batteries, UV filters, and lens cleaning supplies, and small reflectors in my bag.Feedback
As I mentioned before, The most beautiful moment of a sunset does not last for very long. You should try get to your vantage point early, before the sun sets, and get your camera set up on a tripod. It is very important to use a tripod to be able to assure that your image is sharp. Any movement of the camera, especially when making long exposures, can ruin your image. Use a remote shutter release if possible so that you are not causing any camera movement while pressing the shutter button. Finally, do not be afraid to take a lot of pictures at different exposures while the sun is setting. The beauty will fade quickly as the sun continues to set so get as many shots as you can and sort them out when you get home.
