In Texas, summer tanagers only spend the winter in the very southern-most tip of the state. They breed in most of the state north of the southern tip except for the Panhandle. They're on the wary side, even for songbirds, often flying away at the first hints of movement. After sitting patiently for a few long minutes, this one finally flew close enough for me to get a good shot. I photographed this one at Hugh Ramsey Nature Park in Harlingen, near a small pool for the birds to bathe in.
