Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at home on the dining room table.

Time

Early morning has the best light in this North-West facing room.

Lighting

There is a large window to the right and natural light floods the area.

Equipment

Canon 5D mk IV. Taken using a canon 100mm macro lens - creates gorgeous bokeh. Reflector to bounce back some light into the front of the image.

Inspiration

The books are really old and bought from someone who was clearing out their home. The daisies are from the garden. Daisies are simply beautiful yet quite complex in structure. Each of the tiny yellow sections is actually another flower. I like the colours in this image, blue and brown complement well, and I like the texture created by the old book leaves.

Editing

I shoot in RAW so always take my images to do some basic processing and adjustments in Lightroom - I check the white balance is right, add texture, a touch of clarity, white and black adjustments and a vibrancy books to 10%. I take the image into Photoshop where I enjoy playing with filters - Topaz have a great range and the Feature Enhancement gives a pop to images that I like.

In my camera bag

I like to prepare for a range of eventualities - so 24 - 105mm, 100mm macro and my new go-to experimental lens - Helios 44-2. I always take a small Reflector - an essential bit of light-weight and light-enhancing kit.

Feedback

People think that still-life work is easy to do, but getting the composition right takes time, planning, some experimentation and patience. Use a reflector to bounce light into those areas you want to feature, use a tripod, remote release and the best, freshest flowers. Work quickly so that the flowers don't droop.
