Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my yard. I live in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom (NEK). The Kingdom is beautiful and sparsely populated. The natural beauty and landscape is what you imagine when you think of Vermont. I am a native, though not to this area of Vermont. I spent most of my spare time here in my camp for the last 15 years and decided to move here permanently about 5 years ago. Vermont is changing very fast and I no longer recognize the town that I grew up in. I wanted to live where there are still working dairy farms and life is a little slower. "We do things slower here" is a saying that I heard when I purchased land here and it is true!

Time

I took this photo is late afternoon. I had been trying to capture the red colors of the budding trees all season. The trees are red two times a year, not just in the fall! It was a cold, raw, dreary, miserable day. I looked outside and saw that the snow was sticking to the buds. I had to take a picture.

Lighting

The light was fading fast when I took this picture.

Equipment

I used a Canon M100 with my late mother's Pentax 50mm 2.0 manual lens attached. (Quite a few of the pictures that I posted are taken with the vintage lens). I had to cover both with a mitten so I didn't ruin either one. I also used a tripod. For such a little camera the M100 takes beautiful pictures, but doesn't have a view finder. It was hard for me to see what I was taking a picture of. I pretty much snapped away hoping to get something decent. I was freezing and wet.

Inspiration

I love nature. I am curious about the natural world. I see beauty every day. Where I live there is really only 5 months out of the year when it doesn't snow in some fashion. To capture the beauty of the individual flakes and frozen buds in one picture was hard to resist.

Editing

I usually don't use post-processing. I cropped this image, that was it. Sometimes I will adjust highlights and shadows and crop images. I personally don't want to get in the habit of applying filters and altering images in a significant way. I'm not knocking those who do, the images are gorgeous. I want to capture and share what I see.

In my camera bag

Recently I purchased a Pentax K-70. I love the Canon M100 and the picture quality I get with it. Especially with the 55-200mm lens. Wow, it's beautiful! However, I need a viewfinder along with weather sealing. So, right now I have the Pentax K-70, a Pentax HD DA 35mm 2.8 macro and a circa 1977 Pentax 50mm 2.0. I bought the Pentax in part due to the availability of lenses. With the Canon I was using an adaptor which was too much for that little camera. I am looking to purchase a telephoto zoom for the new camera in the near future.

Feedback

Always have your camera with you and ready. I just happened to look out the window and see the type of snow that was falling. There wasn't much time as it was starting to get dark. So, I was thankful that I was all set up to take this picture.
