Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in some woodland in East Yorkshire. I’m always drawn to woodland shots. I love how there is some form of haphazard structure and mystery to them.

Time

The shot was taken just after 1300 hrs. Not always the best time of day for woodland photography, but the woods are in a valley so the bright midday sunlight didn’t affect the shot.

Lighting

What drew me to the shot was the light in the distance. The woods are in a valley so the midday sun was catching the tops of the trees and adding a bit of hazy light in the distance. The foreground was in the shade, and didn’t have any unwanted shadows to distract from them. I liked how the tree lines took your eye through the shot to the hazy sunlight in the distance.

Equipment

The shot was taken on my Nikon D500 using my 18-105 lens. The shot was taken at 18mm and was handheld with no flash needed.

Inspiration

I loved the leading the lines of the trees taking your eye through the shot to hazy winter sunshine in the background. I love woodland photography, there is so much to see and appreciate.

Editing

I always post edit my shots; however this needed very little as the light in the background was just perfect. I took two shots and edited one as colour and one as BnW. The main thing I did was just add a touch of clarity on the leaves and trees in the foreground and lowered the clarity in the highlights in the background to accentuate and soften the sunlight.

In my camera bag

I always carry my 18-105mm lens. It’s my goto lens as it’s so flexible for every type of shot. I also carry a 50mm prime and 70-300. The other main piece of kit is the trusty tripod which is invaluable for woodland photography.

Feedback

I got lucky with this as there was enough light to handhold; however, having a tripod is generally a must for woodland photography to get that pin sharp detail which is crucial.
