Location
The photograph was taken in the downtown alley of a single screen theater in Childress Texas, my home town. Since its a small town the downtown area was completely mine to explore so I took full advantage of it.Time
Just after a light rain, I drove downtown and walked around looking for an interesting composition, I had been trying to get a good shot of the front of the theater but since the old fluorescent lights were off it just wasn't very interesting. Remembering that I always liked the back doors, I walked around to the alley and it was perfect.Lighting
I loved the way the single bulb light hung over the door; making the old beaten up white door stand out against the bricks of the building. And the way the lighting on the bricks faded back into the night.Equipment
I used my Nikon D7000, mounted on a tripod with a 55mm lens. The only light in the photo was the single bulb light over the door, and a distant amber alley light.Inspiration
My my goal in photography is to capture the look and feel of things before they fall into ruin. As I have grown older I have seen so many amazing buildings and landscapes destroyed, and I want to capture as many as I can before they are gone. This one, being in a small town was the main place to go as a kid and even in my youth this simple back entrance to the theater always fascinated me; perhaps hinting at my future in the music world. I have always had a draw to what goes on "behind the scenes" and while I am sure my imagination was much better than reality. What it brought to mind was how so many of us (creatives) come, rise to fame and eventually fade away after walking off the stage for the last time. When we are in the spotlight, everything around is is bright and the focus of all attention, but as time moves on, we slip into the night. Yes, I suffer from an over active imagination...Editing
This one required very little post processing, I dehazed it slightly, and pulled some of the highlights down to enhance the fading to darkness look.In my camera bag
While I typically carry all of my gear, on this night I went out with a single 55mm lens, a tripod and my camera strap. I primarily shoot landscapes but I wanted to challenge myself a little on this night.Feedback
Use your imagination, try to capture something that inspires the viewers imagination, and challenge yourself from time to time.
