Strong masculinity with softness of a child, nicely capture of tenderness

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken during a difficult newborn/new family shoot, with cramped conditions in the family's home. Baby wouldn't settle, Mum needed a break. I was chatting with Mum when it all went quiet, I turned to see Dad had picked up and calmed the baby, so just asked him if it was ok to shoot. It is one of my favourites, I love the contrast between the masculinity of dad and his amazing tattoos and the tenderness he shows with his baby girl and the way she snuggles into him.

Time

The short was taken mid morning in January in a first floor bedroom.

Lighting

Taken in front of a large bay window on an overcast January day. I had just available daylight and one continuous light set high above and behind my right shoulder as looking at the subject.

Equipment

Canon 7d Mkii with Canon EF24-105 f/4L IS USM Shot @ 28mm 1/45@f4, ISO400 No flash, one continuous light. Background was a length of dark black stretchy jersey material from my fabric stash.

Inspiration

The photoshoot was planned, but this image wasn't. It was a spur of the moment thing, baby was giving us a hard time and wouldn't settle at all, whilst Mum was having a well earned break, , Dad managed to pick up baby and settle her. I took a whole series of shots, but this one stood out for me. I had done the Mums baby bump/maternity photos and have done other sessions for them since

Editing

Yes, all done in Lightroom (photoshop overwhelms me!) Converted from colour to black and white, darkened the blacks and upped the clarity a bit to bring out more depth/texture in dads skin and hair

In my camera bag

Canon 5d Mk iii, or 7D Mk ii, Canon EF 50mm 1:1.4, Canon EF 24-105 1:4 L IS USM, Canon EF 70-200 1:4 L USM, Canon Speedlite 430 EXIII-RT Spare batteries, tripod if I can be bothered to carry the extra weight, bottle of water and couple of bars of chocolate. Bag is usually a lightweight waterproof rucksacks with separate padded drawstring bags inside for lenses etc. Depending where I am off to, its usually a last minute choice, but I find it hard to travel light.

Feedback

Everyone learns in different ways, I have to learn by doing. If I see an image I would like to recreate or get similar results to, I study it and try to figure out where the light is coming from and where it is going, where the shadows fall, the intensity and what the source may be. Then do the same to imagine what settings are used and why and then what may have been done in post processing to get the final effect and what I might do differently.
