Location
I took this photo in a remote part of Australia. I had been driving past this hill for many years while on my way to a mining town where I worked. The surrounding land is flat dry and barren making this hill stand out in this environment. I had been doing the odd astrophotography I think it is a privilege to be able to witness this magnificent night skyTime
The stars are always visible here but to get the Milky way in the right position for this shot included month, year, time of night and weather. (Luck) This was taken in the hours after midnight.Lighting
I used long exposures high, iso, everything else is natural light. No torch or flash, what you see is what you get.Equipment
I used a Nikon D750 camera strong tripod. and a The Samyang 14mm Ultra-Wide-Angle f/2.8 lensInspiration
I see a lot of amazing astrophotography on ViewBug and when the opportunity arises I have a go, and this is the result.Editing
This photo took seven photos as the hill is more like a mountain. They were stitched together. To my surprise it worked. I slightly change the while balance to get a cooler sky.In my camera bag
I don't carry a lot of equipment. I normally have my Nikon D750 camera with a 50mm lens and ND filter in my shoulder bag and carry a tripod! On odd occasions when doing astrophotography I will fit the The Samyang 14mm lens. Rarely do I use my long distance 300 mm lens. I love my 50mm lens and that stays on my Nikon D750 camera. That goes everywhere withe me.Feedback
Plan your photo, take a thermos of coffee. Keep warm! Use a high iso setting and long exposure.Look for good composition in the surrounding area. Have fun with it. Even bad shots look good!
