Behind The Lens

Location

What an experience to be completely present as my son got to witness his first sighting of a rainbow at 13 months old. This photograph was taken outside in the comfort, free-flowing space of our first home as a family. Our property is located in Brisbane, Australia - the Sunshine State - and is built on 2 levels, this being the lowest level of the house which always provides us and our guests with a beautiful open view of the sky. The neighbor's property is built on even lower ground allowing mother nature and her beauty to shine every early rising or evening. She always puts on a mesmerizing display which never fails to disappoint us.

Time

On the 21st February 2021 at 6:28 pm this memory was captured through the lens and saved in a time slot which we can now forever keep the moment in our minds and physically in a frame, that we can hold in our hands or place it in a photo book to pull out and reminiscence over time and time again.

Lighting

At this time of the day - which was quite late in the afternoon - the lighting was changing almost every couple of seconds due to the sun setting. Rays of light were cutting through the atmosphere which helped to offer a warm vibrant tone to the scene while it stuck around for about 30 minutes. I will have to post the original on my page if you'd like to see that and compare it to this version I created.

Equipment

I used an Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max and set the lens to Ultra Wide (0.5x). The iPhone was placed only a few centimeters from where my son is and roughly 1m away from where I am sitting.

Inspiration

The inspiration behind capturing this moment came from my Son, 13 months of wandering the world and was still yet to witness a rainbow but not this particular afternoon. I communicated with him to show him and at that exact moment I set the camera up - of course, he wasn't looking at the rainbow by the time the shot had been snapped haha - but I still captured a moment where we were both so present. My Son's name is Te Kahurangi. In Maori, it means "the blue" or "precious gift" and to be able to share this with him was a small sentimental gift of a memory that I could offer him in his life so far that I hope he'll cherish just as much as I do when he crosses paths and discovers it again.

Editing

I played around with a ton of different settings that are accessible using the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max and the basic edit tools that come with it. I played with altering the brightness, contrast, and almost every feature I was able to use to get it the way I did. There was no right or wrong way with this as I just did what I liked and loved how it turned out. The goal was to somehow create a memory that looked as if it was almost dreamy. I've loved creating this and I look forward to my growth as I'm looking at wanting to expand the art I curate over to the NFT space which has to do with cryptocurrency and the blockchain. Creating "moments" like these but by incorporating "moments" through digital artwork is something I'd love to be able to share with people.

In my camera bag

Just my iPhone and an iPhone case!

Feedback

0.5 wide lens is a game-changer on the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max. I don't think I would have wanted to get this shot any other way!
