Location
This photo was taken from a dock connected to an eatery that I was enjoying dinner at. Located in Virginia Beach, this dock makes for an amazing view when the sun is setting as the sunset reflects off of the water!Time
I remember looking up from eating my dinner around 5:00pm and seeing the sun starting to go down. I knew this location was one of the best for catching sunsets, so I already had my camera with me and ready to go, just in case I got lucky with a colorful view! As it started setting, I could see the orange sky get brighter and illuminate the sky around it. I immediately got up from the table and ran to the edge of the dock. I didn't have my tripod with me, but that didn't stop me from capturing what is now my favorite sunset photo on the water.Lighting
I wanted to wait until the sun was below the waterline before I captured any photos. I didn't want a reflection of the direct sunlight to take away from the beautiful colors that were being reflected off of the water and the sky.Equipment
This was shot with a Sony a5100, lens 3.5-5.6/16-50. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
Being from an area right on water, I have always been consumed by the beauty of sunsets. No matter how many I saw, I always looked at them as if it were my first time. When I got my camera, I had moved to the mountains of Colorado and wasn't near the ocean to capture the sunsets. So, when my husband and I took a trip to see my family in Virginia, I made sure to bring my camera with hopes that I would be at the right place at the right time to capture a breathtaking sunset on the water.Editing
I didn't do any post-processing!In my camera bag
I always have my photography license, my Sony a5100, and my charger! As I'm still building my equipment inventory, these are always my necessities and haven't failed me yet!Feedback
So many times, I have tried to capture a photo of a sunset but the direct sunlight has always taken away from the colors I am focusing on. Timing is everything! For this particular shot, I waited until the sun had just disappeared behind the water, but the colors were still very much vivid! I only had a few minutes to get a good photo before the colors dissipated and the sun had completely set.
