I took this photo while standing on a balcony of a hotel my husband and I were staying at the night of our wedding. The night scene in Norfolk, Virginia is breathtaking.Time
Right after the sunset, I walked outside and noticed how beautiful my surroundings were as the building lights and street lights lit up the city. St first, I was a little upset that we didn't get a room facing the ocean behind us. However, this view was all the better.Lighting
I really wanted to emphasize how powerful the city lights were in just this small fragment of a photo. Each light illuminates differently, giving you different, small details to focus on throughout the entire photo.Equipment
This was shot with with Sony a5100 with a E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS lens. No other equipment was used.IInspiration
Growing up in Virginia Beach, I always admired the city night life. The different colored lights, the unique restaurants, and the all around vibe that Norfolk gives off is worth remembering. While standing on the highest balcony in the hotel, I couldn't resist capturing the beauty that was just below me.Editing
This photo was originally processed in color, with small enhancements to illuminate the colors beaming from the lights. When converting the photo to black and white, I did not add any additional enhancements. In my camera bag
I always have my camera, my lens, and my charger packed in my bag. I carry the bag around almost as much as I would a purse- you truly never know when you'll come across an area with amazingly unexpected beauty. Sometimes I only take a few pictures, and other times I find myself with my camera in hand for hours. I would hate if it died on me. The last thing I would want to say is, "I wish I had my camera with me." Thankfully, that hasn't happened yet.Feedback
Certain times of the year, city night life gets busy, with higher numbers of tourists and even locals wanting to spend the night on the town. Be careful with the timing of the photo as you don't want car lights or too many people in the frame to take away from the point you're trying to make with the photo. Also, be sure the sky isn't too bright that it takes away from the illuminating street and business lights that you want to use as your lighting.
