Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Aviemore in Scotland.

Time

It meant getting up at 4am to get to the hide well before the Osprey would think about stretching its wings and looking for breakfast. It was extremely cold, barely above freezing, but well worth tolerating the early start and mild discomfort to see this magnificent bird swoop in to grab a trout.

Lighting

I was very lucky to have excellent natural lighting, and also fortunate to have the Osprey fly towards the camera, as this was unpredictable there being little or no breeze.

Equipment

The Canon IDX2 with the Canon 100-400L IS II USM lens mounted on a tripod didn't let me down - I took a rapid series of tracking shots with shutter speed priority of 1/1000 and ISO 1250, this shot was f8.0.

Inspiration

I'd always been intrigued by raptors and had heard this location was ideal to get shots of Ospreys fishing.

Editing

This shot was taken RAW and post-processed in Lightroom. I slightly decreased the highlights in this cropped photo, and increased dehaze with small increases in vibrance and saturation.

In my camera bag

I normally carry a Canon IDX2 with the Canon 100-400L IS II USM lens and a Canon x1.4 III converter. I also carry a Canon EF 24-70 f/4L IS USM lens.

Feedback

Clearly the most important factor is to research and choose the right site at the right time of day and the right time of year.
