Location
This photo was taken near our mountain cabin in Southern Norway during the mid winter freezing period. Temperatures were down to -20 below zero (Celsius) in the early morning. With some boiling water in the thermos bottle my youngest son threw it around on command.Time
Early morning, with the sun still low on the sky, we went out to shoot.Lighting
Since there is a strong backlight (the sun), I used a flash to balance it a bit.Equipment
At the time I was using the Canon 1DXmkII with the EF 24-70 f2.8 mkII, and a Profoto A1, shoe-mounted.Inspiration
We had this shoot planned for a while and we were waiting for the right conditions to occur. With the low temperatures, dry air and clear skies, all conditions were met, so we just threw on some warm clothes and went outside with the bottles of boiling water and fooled around for a while. I made sure we had the sun from behind, to have the best view of the splashing.Editing
Very little post processing was done to this shot, just some white balance and shadows and highlights adjustments in LightRoom. In my camera bag
When going to the mountains, I usually go with a lighter bag: Just the Canon 11-24, 24-70. 100-400, and the Sigma 14mm f1.8 (for night shooting) and two cameras: Canon 1DXmkII and 5DSR. In the same bad, I also have the Profoto A1 with a remote trigger, but I usually just use it hot shoe mounted, for practical reasons.Feedback
It's easy to shoot something similar, just wait for really low temperatures, a sunny morning, and bring some boiling water in a bottle. Then just have fun and experiment with throwing the water around.
