Behind The Lens

Location

There is a secluded corner of Kew Gardens where there are several bird feeders which attract numerous small birds.

Time

Late morning - we normally get to this spot around 11:30 with dappled light filtering through the trees, at that time of day it is usually very gentle.

Lighting

It can be tricky - the birds rarely are still so a fast shutter speed and reflexes are needed.

Equipment

Canon EOS 7D mk2, with a 70-200mm lens

Inspiration

The blue tit perched and posed perfectly.

Editing

Shot in RAW so a little “developing” and minimal tweaks of exposure, not something I enjoy do tend to do a much in camera as possible.

In my camera bag

Apart from my camera I usually only take one lens, spare batteries, a filter and a cleaning cloth.

Feedback

Patience, stillness to allow the birds to alight, then move fast to get the composition, and focusing right then being still again when the shutter clicks. It is also good fortune to have a place where you can watch the birds feed.
