Behind The Lens

Location

I am hobbyist photographer and carry my camera most of the time so as not to miss an opportunity, especially during traveling. I clicked this photo of the Aravalli Mountain Range and surrounding area from a flight to Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India.

Time

This aerial photo was clicked on 22 Dec, 2018 at 11:27AM. It was a bright sunny day.

Lighting

While taking photographs from a flight, a lot depends on the natural light and visibility. Luckily the weather was perfect - very good for landscape photo. I was looking forward to capture some good clicks. The terrain is very dry and rugged and it is clearly visible from high altitude. You can see the dried-up Sabarmati riverbed and the popular hill station ‘Mount Abu’ in the distance. This means visibility of about 80km.

Equipment

I was carrying Nikon D3200 with Nikkor 18-55mm, f/3.5-5.6G lens. No other equipment was involved. As this photo was taken from moving flight, there was no chance of using tripod.

Inspiration

Though drones and special scenic flights offer better view and opportunity for photographs, I keep my camera handy during flights. Aerial photography offers vast range of subjects such as geographical landmarks, structures, patterns, sky, clouds, colors, sunrise/sunset, light rays and so on. The place I was traveling to is famous for the desert and rugged landscape; so I was keen on getting a few good clicks.

Editing

One of the disadvantages of taking picture from flight is, you have no control over cleanliness and clarity of windows, and it does affect your photo quality; even though the landscape is well lit. For this photo I did some basic edits like color enhancement, brightness, contrast and bit of sharpening using High Pass filter.

In my camera bag

I mostly carry Nikon D3200 camera with Nikkor 18-55mm, f/3.5-5.6G lens as this makes a great choice for a wide variety of shooting situations, from portraits to landscapes. I also have Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G lens for low light and candid photos. I use, Nikon 70-300 mm f/4.5-5.6 telephoto lens for wildlife and travel photos. For landscapes, the use of tripod is recommended.

Feedback

Generally for a landscape photo you need to have a lot of patience for setting up equipment, composing, and waiting for perfect light and situation. Unfortunately non of this is available during flight. To avoid any shake, do not touch lens or camera to the airplane window. As the plane is constantly in motion, you have no control over the flight path or frame to capture. Occasionally, you have to do little maneuvers in your limited seat area to frame the landscape, so it is a bit challenging too. Nevertheless, a good photograph is always a rewarding experience.
