Behind The Lens

Location

Here's a secret... Pacific City Oregon... nearing the fall... is COLD!!!! So take a pro like this one! I STILL am amazed at her composure in that frigid water!! Can you tell that water is in the mid 30's?

Time

This was the morning we were actually leaving and Ainslee, the model, had been wanting to just jump in the water all weekend! So after we packed up our gear she put on the gown and went for it! It was a hilarious mess after the fact, and many of us had a rather soggy trip home! (3+ hour drive home)

Lighting

Lighting is probably the MOST important thing... and then again its NOT. Let me explain... In this picture it was cloudy/overcast and had a horrible blue tone to everything. I just made sure she was exposures correctly and then took care of the majority of the lighting in Post. For me, in Post, thats where MY magic happens.

Equipment

For this shot we used one of our handy Canons- the 70D. Just a simple handheld shot on our stomachs with the model. My favorite lens is the 18-50mm and typically I shoot at 50mm. For this entire shoot I opted to shoot 'naturally' with nothing other than one of my absolute FAVORITE tools- the 5 in 1 reflector. That thing is worth 3x its weight in gold!

Inspiration

It's really a simple story of adventure. The model (one of my recurring ones) was a senior who was looking for something fun for her senior photos (mid pandemic and bummed her senior year was ruined). We had shot a photoshoot earlier in the summer at Pacific City, Oregon for another client and Ainslee loved the location so we went back there. This girl loves everything water and wanted to play in it. So after we got all the other "Dry" shots we told her "Go for it!" and we had a hilarious, freezing, blast!

Editing

Post processing: This required removing A LOT of cold goosebumps and then color grading the image to a warmer tone. I wanted a sun kissed image so, in addition to the standard color grading, I added a slight light leak in the upper right hand corner. When doing these I find less is more- so if you want to try this, ere on the side of restraint and ALWAYS following the natural shadows in your image. In terms of the model, nothing was retouched. (lucky girl...)

In my camera bag

My bag and me are BFF's... In it I have some unique items you wouldn't expect. In addition to my favorite camera, the Canon 70D, my 50mm lens and countless extra SD cards, I have some other surprises. One being my harness. I don't care for the standard camera strap so I purchased a super comfortable harness and no matter how I'm contorted the camera stays hooked to me. Next would be my wrap bandage. As someone who struggles with disabilities, I shoot primarily with my camera resting on my wrist, so the wrap helps cushion the weight! From there we had my randoms like tweezers, q-tips, spray bottle of glycerin and quarters! I told you RANDOM! But I use these ALL the time! And probably MOST important... I always carry a Snickers candy bar. You never know when the stress of being on set will require a little sugary pick-me up!

Feedback

Sometimes you don't need to try so hard. There really is beauty in just simple moments. Having Ainslee lay down in water, wet and a mess but at such peace creates a wonderful experience for the viewer. Try finding beauty in small moments. They can sometimes be the most impactful.
