Behind The Lens

Location

I took this foto on a drive to Mexico City from San Miguel de Allende. It was just about right time, right place. We pulled over to get gas, something to drink and to have a cigarette and there was just one horse on the side of the road. I thought he/she was beautiful so out came my Nikon d610.

Time

It was probably between 12 and 1pm. I am lucky the sun didn't just blow this pic out all together. My file say it was taken at ISO 800, f/6.3 and shutter speed at 1/4000. I guess at that fast a shudder speed I captured this foto pretty dark and brought up my shadows in Camera Raw.

Lighting

This was basically a street shot out in the open on the side of a road in the midday sun, so I have no special lighting tricks to share. I would just say pay attention to the histogram on your camera and make sure nothing is peeking or coming in too dark.

Equipment

I used a Nikon d5200 with a Nikkor 23-300mm lens. There was no flash because i didnt really have time or any need for one. We were having having a driving break on our way to Mexico City. No tripod, unfortunately, I had to do this hand held. I did retouch it with some of curves and saturation layers.

Inspiration

My inspiration was simply the beauty of this horse. he was all alone on the side of the road which gave him a very feral feeling to me.

Editing

I did not do a lot of post-processing on this foto. I created a few curves layer and one saturation layer. The thing I did was create a black mask so I was able pick and choose what portion the foto was actually filtered.

In my camera bag

I use a Nikon d850 a Nikkor 28-300mm, Nikon24-120mm or a Nikon 60mm Macro.

Feedback

The advice I would give to anyone whio is moved by photography, try to always have a camera near you. When you are out in the world, be patient.... The world is full of humans so, you know, it is all just a matter of time.
