Behind The Lens

Location

Hoi An in Vietnam is such a beautiful place, its brightly lit, colourful paper lanterns make it's busy streets much loved by tourists, yet just off the beaten track you can find gems like the passageway featured. I hope to revisit Hoi An again in the future, a place worthy of its World Heritage status and one of the highlights of any visit to Vietnam.

Time

After a busy day, we walked back into the town for a meal, the sun went down and on the way back, by now totally dark, I noticed the passageway with its interesting lighting

Lighting

I loved the way the street seemed to glow with the light coming out of the building, a total contrast to the bright coloured lanterns that adorn every building in the main streets

Equipment

I didn't have a tripod so relied on holding my much loved Fujifilm X-T2 steady and boosted the ISO to 6400 and it captured the moody lighting beautifully.

Inspiration

I had taken loads of photos of the brightly coloured lanterns and busy streets but noticed the contrast in the quiet passageway, I particularly liked the mystery of the low light and what lies beyond

Editing

I used Lightroom to darken the intensity of the light at the top of the frame as it tended to over power the scene, but the main lighting was untouched.

In my camera bag

The X-T2 is the ideal travel companion, compact yet full featured, you can carry a whole kit in one camera bag easily! I normally use the XF18-135mm lens as it is the ideal travel companion. I also have in my bag an X-T20 with the XF10-24mm for those wide angle shots. And it saves swapping lenses all the time! Apart from that I have a Fuji flash, although it rarely gets used and for video I have a DJI Osmo pocket.

Feedback

Look for the less obvious scenes, everyone was taking photos of the colourful lanterns and the boats on the river, but looking the other way I found this interesting passageway, It is one of my favourite photos of my trip to beautiful Vietnam
