Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a local beach called the Bendricks in south Wales, it part of a project to photograph the Vale of Glamorgan coastline at sunset or sunrise. I had also just starting to use a 10 stop ND filter and decided to try it out as the clouds were obscuring the sun rising above Steep Holm Island in the Bristol channel to see what effect it would have.

Time

This was early morning, I had been there for a while and had taken some images of the blue hour, but was hoping that the breaks in the cloud would give a nice effect

Lighting

As the sun came up you could see the light starting to change from blue to purple and then the orange and red of the sun rays, the cloud just managed to thin out in places to allow a mottled affect and with it a lovely colours onto the near flat sea

Equipment

Canon 50D, Sigma 18-125mm, benbo tripod, 10 stop K&F filter and remote release.

Inspiration

I am looking to complete a calendar of local areas along the Vale of Glamorgan coastal path this year, so I am photographing each location at sunrise and sunset. Plus sometimes people do not know what is on their own doorstep and what beauty nature has install for us everyday if you are willing to get out there and look for it. Since taking this image and other of the area around Barry, south Wales people have said to me that it is taking them back to memories of when they use to visit the coast more than they do now.

Editing

Some exposure changes in Lightroom, and a possible straighten of the horizon that is all, otherwise I always try and follow one of my mentors in a local camera club to try and do everything you can in camera

In my camera bag

This will depend on what I am going out to photograph or knowing what might be around, but currently mainly the Kit mentioned above but with additional filters of a reverse grad, 4 stop soft grad. sometimes I may pop in my Nikon P1000 if I think there is a chance of wildlife as well

Feedback

Be prepared, plan your visit as best you can if it is a sunrise or sunset shot at the beach look at the tide times to make sure you are safe, look at apps to see where the sun will rise or set. Be patient, you may not what you want the first time, but keep on going and don't be afraid of experimenting, look at other for inspiration.
