Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the dunes near Noordwijk, Zuid-Holland.

Time

I took this shot at the beginning of the day since the light is always a little more beautiful then.

Lighting

I just love how the light just hits the left side of the deer and it really gives this buck a highlight in its left eye.

Equipment

For this photo, I just used my Canon EOS 2000D and an old Sigma 35-250mm lens.

Inspiration

I have always loved deers and bucks, they are very beautiful animals. Sometimes I just wake up early and decide to take some photos. It's very fun to cycle and walk through the dunes and even more, fun to take photos of this beautiful creature.

Editing

I did some retouching in Lightroom but nothing too drastic, just a little contrast, temperature and some other general adjustments.

In my camera bag

In my photography bag, I always have my telephoto lens, my kit lens, my lens ball, my magnification filters, my nd-filter, my Gorillapod, my tripod, two old phones(for reflections) and an old camera.

Feedback

If you want to photograph animals you do need some kind of telephoto lens depending on the kind of animal you want to take pictures of. As for deers and bucks you do want to keep your distance or at least approach them in a calm manner. Not because they are very aggressive, but because you do not want the animal to feel very stressed in their own environment. Furthermore, in my opinion, the best photos of animals are the ones where the either look into your lens or where they interact with each other. This makes the shot a lot more interesting than them just standing around looking in the distance, this means you must be patient.
