Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the shore of Lake Pukaki last September just before a late season snow storm.

Time

This is actually one of my favourite photos. I recall getting up and upon seeing how windy it was, I was disappointed as I could not obtain any reflection shots. So we drove 30 mins to check out local landscape ideas and came across this view. It was 12PM when I set up the tripod and almost 12.30 when I started snapping away.

Lighting

I was hoping for drama with the clouds over the mountains but luckily I had odd spots of light shooting through at the same time. It was also quite cold so that helped with the clarity.

Equipment

This was shot with my Nikon D750 setup on a tripod. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I was looking for epic landscapes and on the day could see that clouds would add to the drama spilling over the ranges.

Editing

I usually do some post processing with all my landscapes. In this case I added extra drama with a graduated filter to add depth and a little darkness to the clouds. I upped the highlights a tad and did my best to make the scene extra clear with texture and clarity tweaked. With that done, any blemishes on the sensor were rectified in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I always pack my trusty 24-120mm lens (my kit lens) along with my tripod. These two are first in. Followed by a wired external release shutter for long exposure shooting paired with a ND10 screw on filter.

Feedback

MacKenzie Country is almost always inspiring with four seasons in one day over Spring or Autumn. I would recommend finding a good spot on one of the local lakes if you're after landscapes and sit and wait. The weather will provide! If it is windy or still.
