Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken in Squamish, B.C. in the Mamquam Valley. I am a self-taught photographer and this is my first DSLR camera so every shoot is pretty much a new lesson for me.Time
This was taken in the mid-afternoon (1:47 PM on January 9th, 2021 to be exact).Lighting
It was a cloudy and cold day, but the scenery and view of the mountains were amazing.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D780, with a 24-120mm VR Lens. No other equipment was involved.Inspiration
This is probably one of my favorite images. We ascended up 12 km of a treacherous backcountry road in my friend Serena’s Jeep Renegade to an old logging line (S Line) in the Mamquam Valley with my fiancée Melissa. Trusting my friend’s knowledge of the Backcountry, she took us to this spot with 360-degree views of the coastal mountains, garibaldi park, and beyond. There, we could see the path of destruction of the now dormant Mt. Garibaldi's lava flow that wiped the land clean thousands of years ago leaving behind only a desolate landscape of lava, boulders and the shrubs that dare to grow. Perched on top of a pile of lava boulders and snow, is where the shot was taken. With a little hike and a fire, we gave our thanks to Mother Earth and the Universe for allowing us to share the beauty and magic of the S?wx?wú7mesh land.Editing
The camera settings I used were aperture f/7.1, ISO 100, shutter 1/400 and focal Length 1200/10 and Adobe Lightroom Classic to make my basic/color adjustments. In my camera bag
I just got my camera four days before I took this photo, so I only had my 24-120mm VR kit lens that came with the camera with me that day. However, since then, I now have an AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR telephoto lens and SB-5000 Speedlight flash, a zeiss lens cleaning kit and I am currently shopping for my first tripod.Feedback
I didn’t know very much about the camera or settings - I was mostly exploring it and all of its features, so I took multiple shots of everything in just about every setting to get this capture. Basically, I got lucky!
