Behind The Lens

Location

Made this photo on the tropical paradise of Bali, Indonesia. Pantai Mengening (or Mengening Beach) is one of many Bali's natural wonders. Pantai Mengening has black sandy beach. The beach faces a breathtaking scenery of the Indian Ocean with big waves and granite rocks, deep blue water, and sea cliff formations.

Time

There were heavier than usual traffic on that day (Sunday, March 3, 2019) leading towards Pantai Mengening. Perhaps the locals were also enjoying their weekends with their families and friends. Because of heavy traffic on the road (not a highway), arrived at Pantai Mengening late. At 6pm, the sun was going down quickly. Furthermore, "good" spots were already taken up by other photographers who arrived earlier. And, the weather was not forgiving - dark clouds were looming over the horizon and moderate drizzle had started. Setting up the tripod and camera system had to be snappy and good to go (i.e. make that photograph).

Lighting

Tried a few shots and did not like the photos captured through the viewfinder. Decided to move away from a group of photographers and got closer to those granite rocks by the crushing waves. Also, decided to use those granite rocks as a leading lines toward a setting sun. The setting sun over the crushing waves made an appealing factor while making that shot. There were two (2) other incidental factors that help to accenture "Harmonious Elements." Two (2) large round pebbles placed at the foreground and a couple's pre wedding photo shoot added a little flare to the setting sun and looming dark clouds.

Equipment

Shot with Sony A7M3 with Samyang (Rokinon) 14mm f/2.8 on a tripod with ND64.

Inspiration

The reflection of a setting sun over the horizon. Dark clouds and setting sun pacing with each other while moderate drizzle was already in action. The other "actor" was the crushing waves onto the granite rocks. These were the elements I saw and felt that evening.

Editing

Had to pull back the highlights and added details in the shadows using luminosity. This allowed me to accentuate the granite rocks, the weeding couple, and two large round pebbles. Then, added warm glow into the sky, clouds, (reflected onto) crushing waves and granite rocks, and black sandy beachfront. Finally, emphasized the complementary colors in order to draw the attention to the whole setting scene.

In my camera bag

Carried the holy trinity set whenever I go for a travel or a photo shoot locally or otherwise. Also added into the camera bag are 14mm, 35mm, and 55mm lenses, as well as two (2) full frame bodies

Feedback

Need to know and master your camera settings at your finger tips. Making landscape photographs against the natural elements and time factor (being late due to traffic congestion) can be unforgiving. There is no second chance and each scene is different.
