It was a cloudy morning. We disembarked at 4:30 am and traveled south into the waters off the coast of Mexico. This photo was taken at 10:00 am with the sun hidden deeply behind the dark clouds above.Lighting
I had no help in this department. Since the sun hadn't yet been seen on this cloudy, chilly morning, I had to compensate for the available light.Equipment
I shot this with my Canon T3i using the 18-55mm kit lens. Not knowing much about my camera at the time, I set it on shutter priority mode at 1/3200 sec due to the obvious fast motion and the rocking boat. From there, the camera's values set at ISO-500 and f6.3.Inspiration
Well, quite simply I just seized the opportunity. I took my son on this trip and wanted to take pics of him with his haul of some big tuna (which of course never happened). We could see the pod of dolphins in the distance which can sometimes mean there are tuna near by. Rather than going for my rod, I went for my camera. This picture was the result.Editing
For this particular picture, the only thing I did was cropping. There isn't a single bit of post-editing with this photo.In my camera bag
I'm an amateur with no money. Everything in my bag was bought pre-owned and I've used the hell out of it all. I have the Canon T3i body and the 18-55mm kit lens it came with. I also carry a Canon 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 lens, a Canon 75-300 4-5.6 zoom lens, a Rokinon 14mm fixed 2.8 lens, a Targus Tripod, a remote for long exposures and a lens ball. On this particular day I carried light and only had the kit lens and the 300mm zoom.Feedback
Two pieces of advice: 1. Keep your camera with you. Take it everywhere. You never know when an opportunity to capture something magnificent might present itself. 2. Know your camera. So many pictures I've taken in the past could've turned out so much better had I taken more time to learn. Get it off auto mode and never go back. Set that sucker up on full manual and get out there and capture something amazing.
