In the 1940's an avalanche pulled the ground away from tree roots and miraculously this didn't pull the tree down with it. To this day the roots still reach the mainland and keep the tree alive on the sandstone island. Chapel Rock is in the Pictured Rocks area on Lake Superior. I had to hike back in the dark 3 miles but it was worth it!
