Location
I took this photo on Priaruggia Beach, which is a beautiful section of jagged rocks and small stones along the Ligurian coast in Italy. My muse climbed a rock that jutted into the ocean. I climbed onto the rock with her, balanced, and took the shot.Time
This shot was taken at the beginning stages of sunset. The sun was getting lower in the sky, and so the light was a little softer. The clouds helped, too.Lighting
The lighting was natural light. The only source was the sun, which was made extra soft by the cloudy sky.Equipment
The camera used was a Nikon D850 with a Tamron 24-70mm/f2.8 lens. It was handheld; no tripod and no flash.Inspiration
My muse had beautiful eyes and a beautiful, olive skin tone, and I wanted to create something memorable. I took one look at the sky and the location and knew I had to frame this shot with the sky and water as the background. I also wanted the shot to be close up, and just before I pressed the shutter button, my muse pulled the scarf over her face. It wasn’t rehearsed or planned out; it was just a random last-minute decision that created one of my favorite shots ever.Editing
Post-processing was very minor and consisted of adjusting exposure, increasing texture, and slightly desaturating the image to give it a more matte look.In my camera bag
My bag normally has a Nikon D850, a Tamron 24-70/f2.8, a Tamron 70-200/f2.8, and a GoPro camera. I generally don’t carry more than that unless I’m going for a specific project that needs additional tools.Feedback
Look for great locations and shoot as much as possible. Sometimes, though, the best shots are random and unplanned. But if you’re already in a great location and prepared to take the shot when those random moments occur, you can create images that hadn’t crossed your mind before, and they can be magical.
