Location
This photo was taken at Long Bay beach in Auckland, New Zealand. It was planned that I would meet my friend there to photograph his dog playing with a ball, jumping and running. This is a very long beach as the name implies, and plenty of space to take these photos and not get in the way of anyone else.Time
It was 9 in the morning, this is when dogs are allowed on the beach without a lead, up to 10.Lighting
There was sunlight and a few clouds. I set the camera up to use cloudy for white balance.Equipment
I used a canon 5d mk 11, with a 75-300 lens. I held the camera in my hands. I walked into the sea backwards. The waves are very small and got my friend to throw the ball just to my right, and the dog charged after the ball fully focused on what she was doing. I set the camera to AI Servo, on manual with a fast shutter speed.Inspiration
I bumped into an old friend in town a day before, I had not seen him for 5 years, and he had this lovely dog with him. We arranged to meet on lthe beach the next day specifically to photograph this dog playing with a ball. This is a beautiful dog. I have never done this sort of photography before and did some reading up on the best approach. Our peers always have good advice. I also looked at as many collie photos on Viewbug that I could find.Editing
Very little, just converted to black and white, and did minor tweaks to brightness and contrast. In my camera bag
I have a canon 5D mk 11 and 600D as a backup. I will alternate between the two. A couple of prime lenses and a telephoto or two, and two speed lights make up the core. However like many photographers I have a huge amount of other stuff such as filters, remote releases, cleaning kits, light meters etc. That somehow find thier way into my bagFeedback
As this was the first time I was doing this type of photography with a speeding dog, I am not one to give much advice, however normal photographic principals apply, consider the light, direction of the sun, get a firm hold on the camera, and use AI Servo to help with focusing. Use as fast a shutter speed as you can, adjust aperture to suit, and use ISO as the variable. This is what worked for me. Finally take many photos. Never be afraid to try something new. I learned a lot, had many out of focus pictures, but did manage to get 11 super photos of this dog. I was very pleased with the result.
