Location
I took this photo in the garden of a condominium where I own a vacation home. Everyday somebody sweeps the gardens and the internal street in order to pick up the leaves and flowers and makes a small pile. These piles always call my attention, so I decided to shoot them.Time
I took this photo in the end of the afternoon, when the light was not harsh and actually the sky was cloudy. I didn't want a lot of contrast.Lighting
I used natural light. The sky was cloudy and I didn't want a lot of contrast in the photo. I wanted the texture to stand out. I stood above the pile and kept the camera very vertical.Equipment
I used my Nikon D-610 (full frame) with Nikon lens 85mm f 5.6, 1/60 sec, ISO 2000Inspiration
I thought that there was beauty in that pile of dead leaves and flowers, that were swept by somebody that didn't really cared about them. I loved the textures and lines and patterns and the way the different leaves and flowers were placed randomly.Editing
Because the colors of the dry leaves and even the dead flowers were basically the same, I decided to convert to black and white and take advantage of the shades of grey. The rest of the editing was pretty basic, enhancing the texture and clarity a little bit in order to show the texture. In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon D610 and my Nikon 24-120mm lens. This lens is very versatile and I don't have to change lenses all the time. I sometimes take my Nikon 85mm f1.4 (which was the one I used in this photo), that I love to use when I want to blur the background or when I am taking portraits (again, thatt was the case, a portrit of the pile). When I join a travel photography workshop I also use my wide angle NIkon 16-35mm, and my Rokinon 14mm, f2.4 (for my astrophotography).Feedback
Specially when I am wondering around, I like to observe everything, trying to find a good subject for a photo, and try to imagine what the photo would look like. That was the case of this shot. For some reason it always got my attention until I decided to take a shot. It is like I saw beauty in the piile of dead leaves and flower, and wanted to immortalize it. I am thinking about making a serie of these shots, and actually already started.
