Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio using nothing more than a black poster roll and a piece of fishing line

Time

This was taken around mid day. But I have blackout windows in my studio, so it doesn’t matter what time of day I shoot, it’s always pretty dark, so I have to get creative with my lighting

Lighting

The lighting that I use varies from image to image, this image was taken with the use of two strobes, one placed above the product with a roll of white poster roll acting as a diffuser, one to the side bouncing off of a piece of white card, a speed lite at the front to light the laces and the torch from my iPhone lighting the underneath

Equipment

For this image, I used an old canon eos 1d Mkii, two strobes, a speedlite and the torch from my iPhone. As well as two rolls of poster roll, one white to act as a diffuser and one black to act as the backdrop.

Inspiration

I wanted to show to people who are perhaps just getting started in photography or perhaps doubt their abilities because they have older gear that you can still take professional images with old gear and minimal equipment. This was taken on my computer desk, suspended from a hook in the ceiling using fishing wire. Anyone who knows the old canon 1D mkii will know how limiting it can be.

Editing

For post processing, the raw file for this image was taken into photoshop, I then masked out the fishing line so that it looks as though it’s floating, I then found a fog PNG from the internet and masked it over the image to give it a more rustic and mysterious feel

In my camera bag

I carry very minimal gear in my bag, I usually have two camera bodies. Usually my trusty 1D and an old 50D. I carry a couple of lenses, one of which being my 24-105 L to which is my go to all rounder lens for pretty much everything, a speed lite, and spare batteries. If I haven’t taken something when I get there and I need it, I improvise. I once made a snoot out of an old Pringles tube when on a job, my client looked at me funny, but it worked a treat

Feedback

Just try you best, it doesn’t matter what gear you have, it’s how you use it. Just get creative and make the most out of your surroundings
